Have you ever wondered what it means to “take up the shield of faith”? Maybe you’re thinking, Isn’t faith just believing in God? Well, yes, but it’s also so much more. Faith is a gift from God that strengthens us for the daily battles of life—and that’s why Paul describes it as a shield in Ephesians 6:16. A shield that can block and even extinguish the “flaming arrows” of doubt, fear, and temptation.
But here’s the thing: our shield of faith needs to be strong. It needs to be actively maintained and reinforced. Faith and trust go hand-in-hand, like two parts of a sturdy wall, working together to guard our hearts.
So, let’s talk about how we can practically build up our shield of faith every day:
I'm going to mention just a couple of ways our faith can be fortified, and none of these will be new to you. However, what I have discovered after decades of "knowing" these truths is that I often lose sight of them.
As you read, think of ways you can implement these into your life today.
1. Remember God’s Faithfulness
It’s easy to forget how faithful God has been, especially in tough times. But God’s past works remind us of His unchanging character. Look at Joshua 4:1-7, where the Israelites set up stones to remember how God brought them across the Jordan River. Find ways to remember how God has been faithful to you—maybe through journaling, keeping a list of answered prayers, or simply taking time to reflect on past blessings. Remembering builds trust, and trust strengthens faith.
2. Hold on to God’s Promises
Faith isn’t just about believing in God; it’s about believing in God and trusting His promises even when things don’t make sense. Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, our faith grows because we’re filling our minds with His truth. Try reading a few verses each day and letting them sink in deeply. It’s incredible how these reminders keep us steady when life gets rough.
3. Surround Yourself with Faith-Building Friends
We weren’t meant to go it alone. Hebrews 10:25 tells us to “encourage one another” and keep meeting together. Think of it like a wall of shields—when we’re with other believers, our faith shields are strengthened. We build each other up, pray for each other, and remind each other of God’s promises. Join a Bible study, grab coffee with a friend, or even join an online group. Community strengthens our trust and our faith.
Building your shield of faith takes time and intention, but it’s worth every effort. Faith isn’t just a one-time belief—it’s a daily choice to trust God in everything. The more we reinforce our shield, the more confident we become in God’s strength.
