Praying Scripture Over Men: Husbands, Fathers, Brothers, and Sons

Do you sometimes have trouble with finding the words to pray?  I love using scripture in my prayers because it takes the focus off of me and my desires and points me to what God wants in the lives of my loved ones.  The scriptures below and the prompts are great to pray over men in our lives.  And what a blessing that is!

Introduction

I think it's appropriate that we pray intentionally for the men in our lives.  If you are married, these are great verses to pray over your husbands.  If you are married and are not regularly praying for your husband, I strongly encourage it.  I will admit that there are times in my life when I don't do this like I should so please know that this is not an indictment as much as a reminder for all of us.

Another confession:  I rarely pray intentionally for the men in my life other than my husband and children.  This has become a heavy conviction on me lately.  Yes, I must pray for my husband, but I also feel like I need to pray these same prayers for my father, my father-in-law, my brother and my brother-in-law.  I want to call them by name and cry out to God for them.  I love them each dearly. And although they are all married to wonderful women who pray for them, I know that being a man in this day is hard. My desire is to support them in their lives, their marriages and their walks with God.

So, even if you are not married, I challenge you to find some men in your life that God has put there in his sovereign grace for you to pray for.  They may never know that you are on your knees on their behalf, but a God who loves them more than you do will hear your cry and answer.

10 Prayers to pray over your Husband and other Men in your Life
Prayers for Men

1. Pray that he will have an eternal perspective and glorify God in all that he does.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  Matthew 6:33

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.  Deuteronomy 6:5

2. Pray that he seeks God's plan for his life and for his family.  And pray that he walks in that purpose as well as he can.

I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.  Ephesians 4:1-1

3. Pray that he chooses healthy, God-honoring hobbies and activities to pursue.  Pray for his physical, spiritual, and emotional health.

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12

4. Pray that he is slow to anger and does not easily become frustrated with his job, his wife, his kids or his circumstances.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.  James 1:19-20

So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Romans 14:19

5. Pray that he will work hard in providing for his family, and have discernment in financial matters.

Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.  Romans 12:11

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and money.  Luke 16:13

Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. Proverbs 23:4-5

6. Pray that his sexual desires be focused solely on his wife and that marriage intimacy be both satisfying and an expression of selfless love.  Pray that his heart will be guarded against sexual temptation.

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:14

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. wGod is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.  1 Corinthians 10:13

I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.  Song of Solomon 7:10

7. Pray that he is surrounded by Godly men who will help to keep him accountable and encourage him to grow in his walk with the Lord.

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.  Proverbs 13:20

8. Pray that he will be a light to those around him and boldly share the Gospel.

Proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.  Acts 28:31

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14

9. Pray that he is a Godly example to his children.  And if he is not a father, pray that he will find a younger man to help instruct in the way of the Lord.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.  2 Timothy 2:1-2

10. Pray that he will more fully grasp his identity in Christ and serve God and others with a pure heart.

If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him, there is no falsehood.  John 7:17-18

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3: 23-24
