I want to study the Bible creatively

Love Notes

Grace in Color has encouraged me to discover a method to study the Bible (a combination of inductive + artsy) and prayer in a way that also expresses my creativity.  It has changed the way I approach the Word and prayer, with anticipation and joy rather than dread and obligation.

Lauren W.

I have truly been encouraged by Grace in Color and the intentionality behind the content here. I have been convicted and encouraged to dig into my Bible beyond the surface level and to explore ways in which I would enjoy creatively studying my Bible. I also truly appreciate that there is no pressure to be artistic by nature but rather learn to use different creative methods to study!

Cristin W.

I was raised to go to church every Sunday and that's how I raised my children. But we never really studied the Bible until I found Grace in Color. Even my children love the website. We have all created Bible Journals where we keep our own prayers. It has helped us become a more united family.

  • “The psalms teach us about God and our relationship with Him; that is the heart of theology. The Psalter may be thought of as a portrait gallery of God, presenting us with multiple images of who God is.”⠀

What do you do when you feel so lonely that you want to stay in bed and cry? Or at the very least lose yourself in a Netflix binge?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Where do you turn when you are staring that diagnosis or devastating loss in the face?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Who can help you when the one you thought you would spend the rest of your life with betrays you?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
How do you overcome the feelings of guilt that accompany your inability to do things for your kids because you can barely make it to the next paycheck?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
1. You gather with believers when you don’t feel like it to remind yourself that you are not alone in your struggles. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
2. You pray when you don’t feel like it to remind yourself that God is with you and is all you need. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
3. And you read the Bible when you don’t feel like it to remind yourself that there is no pain in this world that can compare to the glory that awaits you. (Romans 8:18).
.
It’s Sunday. Let’s go to church.

  • Psalm 76:3 "There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah" (ESV)⠀
⠀
"Without leaving his tranquil abode, he sent forth his word and snapped the arrows of his enemies before they could shoot them. The idea is sublime, and marks the ease, completeness, and rapidity of the divine action. The shield, and the sword, and the battle. Every weapon, offensive and defensive, the Lord dashed in pieces; death bearing bolts and life preserving armour were alike of no avail when the Breaker sent forth his word of power. In the spiritual conflicts of this and every age, the like will be seen; no weapon that is formed against the church shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against her in judgment, she shall condemn. Selah. It is meet that we should dwell on so soul stirring a theme, and give the Lord our grateful adoration,—hence a pause is inserted. #charlesspurgeon ⠀

  • Sunday Coffee. ⠀
Today is Easter Sunday. And I'm actually a little torn about this post. Part of me really wanted a super special empty tomb image, a captivating description and a compelling plea for you to stop and remember the resurrection that we celebrate today.⠀
⠀
And that is awesome.⠀
⠀
But part of me wanted to take a step back, choose an everyday image and remind myself, and you, that the resurrection of Christ is something we celebrate every.single.day.⠀
⠀
That is even more awesome.⠀
⠀
Easter Sunday is a beautiful and special day that the church has set aside to collectively commemorate the glorious truth of the Gospel. ⠀
⠀
The truth that Christ, who was fully man and fully God, gave himself to be crucified as a substitution for me and for you on a dark Friday. Then on the 3rd day, rolled away the stone to the borrowed tomb and quite literally rose from the dead. ⠀
⠀
And if you trust in the propitiatory work he accomplished on that cross, you will not only be made clean from your death-deserving sin but will become joint heirs with him. You will be holy because you will now be clothed in his righteousness. ⠀
⠀
It's folly. It's amazing. It's grace. It's too much to fully understand and yet all completely true.⠀
⠀
It's a wonderful Sunday. ⠀
⠀
But, here's the thing. That truth will be just as beautiful tomorrow. And next week. ⠀
⠀
Celebrate today. Sing songs of praise. Worship the King of Kings. Enjoy your family & friends. Remember the cross of Calvary. Bask in the beauty of the risen Saviour. But don't let it end with an emotional Easter Sunday service.⠀
⠀
Worship that risen King every day of your life. Even when you don't feel like it. Because He is worthy. ⠀
⠀
And if you can't say that He is your King, trust in his saving grace today and find someone you know to be a Christian to talk to about it. ⠀
⠀
It's Easter Sunday. Let's go to church.⠀
⠀

  • My heart can’t help but cry out in worship as I reflect on the sacrifice Christ willingly paid on the old rugged cross.
.
He took on the wrath of a Holy God and died a horrible death that I deserved.
.
Then, even more scandalously, he traded his righteousness for my sin.
.
And now I can stand before the Creator of the Universe with clean hands.
.
Why would He do that? My eyes fill with tears when I stop and really contemplate this truth. I can hardly fathom it.
.
He didn’t do it because I am worthy. Or because I am good.
.
He allowed Himself to be nailed to that tree because He loves me. And He chose me.
.
Thank you God for this Good Friday.
.
Yes, Sunday is coming, but I don’t ever want to rush past the agony to get to the victory.

  • Did you get the latest edition of Grace Notes in your email inbox yesterday? ⠀
⠀
There's a little @jenwilkin encouragement (*cough* conviction) about Instagram. Some Gut Health resources that expire this week (random, I know), a free Holy Week Devotional from @desiringgod and my post from the Bible Journaling inspiration series from @alyssaavant (giveaway included).⠀
⠀
Yep, good stuff. Let me know if you are on the list and didn't get it. I'm still a bit worried that the spam monsters are taking it because of all of the links. And if you are not on the Grace Notes list... well, why not? 😂 I'd love to connect with you, too!⠀
⠀
In other news, we are continuing our lazy Spring Break. Well, my kids are being lazy... I'm actually at the office. It's beautiful outside and I'm trying to set my heart on the glory of the cross as we prepare to celebrate Easter.⠀
⠀
What are you up to today? And yay or nay on the Grace Notes? ❤️ ⠀

  • Sunday Coffee. It’s Spring Break around here. And that means rest for my family, usually quickly followed by boredom and a futile attempt to entertain my kids while still getting just as much done in a week as normal. ⠀
⠀
We have never been the kind of people who could leave town for a week over school breaks and I’ve come to be ok with that. Although if I’m totally honest there are times when the social media posts from Disney or the beach or other random vacation spots bother me. Not because I want to go to any of these places necessarily but because I feel guilty that my kids are missing out. And If I’m even more honest, I dread the “What I did over Spring Break” writing assignment they will have to write upon return to the classroom. ⠀
⠀
Have you ever felt that way?⠀
⠀
It’s sin. Yep, it’s pride and it’s envy and its discontentment with what I’ve been given. ⠀
⠀
And it’s not only injurious to my soul but it sets a poor example for my kids. They have done nothing to deserve to be entertained every minute of every day and it’s only because of our love and grace that we do special things for them. They need to understand that. ⠀
⠀
They also need to know that we love them even if they don’t get the extra stuff. To the point of being willing to die for any of them. Their unanswered prayers for an elaborate vacation do not lessen our love for them.⠀
⠀
Our Heavenly Father often answers our prayers in the way we desire, but even if He doesn’t, He still loves us. And unlike me or Brad, is always good and perfect.⠀
⠀
So, enjoy Disney. Or enjoy Netflix. Be content and show those around you the joy of that contentment.⠀
⠀
What are you doing over Spring Break? ⠀
⠀
It’s Sunday. Let’s go to church. ⠀
